Manzhouli — Zabaykalsk rail crossing: logistics cycle cut by 1–2 days
In the first half of 2026 the Manzhouli rail crossing handled 11.248 million tonnes of cargo worth 78.09 billion yuan — up 4.4% in tonnage and 34.9% in value. Over the same period it passed 2,962 container trains and 293,000 TEU: plus 35.1% and plus 28.7% respectively.
What is happening
Manzhouli Customs reports the overall logistics cycle has been cut by 1–2 days. The result was achieved through an expedited rail-transit regime combined with pre-declaration and inspection by appointment, as well as a data-exchange platform between customs, the railway and carriers that removes part of the delays caused by manifest discrepancies and release holds.
A separate item is money. Over the half-year, customs helped companies obtain a 47.66 million yuan discount on the return tariff for container trains and 6.17 million yuan in customs-payment concessions.
On the Russian side, according to Chita Customs, in the first half about 4,200 loaded trains were cleared through the Zabaykalsk rail crossing and 11.2 million tonnes were carried (+4.13%).
What it means for the shipper
The stated cycle reduction is real only for those who file a pre-declaration and work by inspection appointment. A sender who arrives “as is” gets no gain — they get a queue. The difference between the two schemes is measured in days today, and more during peak weeks.
