Zabaykalsk — Manzhouli: why in 2026 this is the most predictable route from China

While sea logistics has spent a second year in force-majeure mode, the land corridor through Zabaykalsk and Manzhouli has quietly become the main gateway for Chinese imports to Russia. Not “one of the options” but the base scenario for those who care about timing and clear cost.

Below are the figures for the first five months of 2026 and what they mean for the cargo owner.

10.5 million tonnes in five months: scale that matters

Zabaykalsk — Manzhouli remains the largest land crossing on the Russia–China border. In January–May 2026 more than 10.5 million tonnes of cargo passed through the hub — more than through any other checkpoint on the eastern border.

For comparison, the nearest neighbours by “weight class”:

Crossing Turnover, 5 mo. 2026 Specialisation
Zabaykalsk — Manzhouli~10.6 M tuniversal: coal and ore export + import of machinery, equipment, electronics, consumer goods
Grodekovo — Suifenhe (rail)~1.8 M t coal + containersraw-material export, single-track line
Blagoveshchensk — Heihe (road)~650 k tspecial machinery, cars

The difference is not ambition but structure. Blagoveshchensk and Grodekovo are niche channels for a specific product range. Zabaykalsk simultaneously carries the mass export of Russian raw materials and the full spectrum of Chinese imports: from a container of clothes to 3,000-tonne oversized cargo.

What it gives the client. At a universal hub there is always transport, warehouses and return loading. You don’t have to fit your product range to the crossing’s capabilities — the crossing adapts to the cargo.

Clearance speed: 30 minutes for perishables, 4 hours for 93 trucks

Customs on the road direction works 24/7. Perishables — fresh fruit and vegetables — are cleared in about half an hour: in January–April some 70,000 tonnes of southern fruit passed through the hub.

A telling heavy-machinery case: a Chinese XCMG XLC30000 crawler crane weighing over 3,000 tonnes was dismantled and distributed across 93 heavy trucks. The whole column completed the full customs-control cycle in 4 hours — under three minutes per vehicle. “Green corridors” and a non-contact inspection complex are in use: scanning instead of unloading.

What it gives the client. Border dwell has stopped being the main risk item in the delivery-time calculation. Timing is counted by route, not by the queue at the checkpoint.

Road crossing: +27% to turnover and reconstruction to 2,400 vehicles a day

The Zabaykalsk road checkpoint cleared about 120,000 international transport vehicles over five months (+29.7% year on year) with turnover over 1.2 million tonnes (+27.5%).

Reconstruction is under way without stopping the checkpoint: the number of lanes will grow from 17 to 28, and capacity from 800 to 2,400 vehicles a day. Completion is due in 2028.

Railway: a second track and transit in 1–2 days

In May 2026 an intergovernmental agreement was signed on building a second 1,435 mm gauge track on the cross-border section. Right now Russian and Chinese trains share one combined stretch — this is the hub’s main bottleneck. The second track will separate the flows.

Effect by 2030: +11 million tonnes of carrying capacity (up to ~39–40 million tonnes a year), about 50 pairs of trains a day, end-to-end transit time of 1–2 days.

Transshipment onto the Russian 1,520 mm gauge, of course, isn’t going anywhere. But it is precisely the point where cargo can be not just reloaded but unpacked, consolidated, reworked and cleared.

The commodity dynamics over five months speak for themselves: rail imports of Chinese EVs grew 9.5-fold (320 million yuan), clothing 54.3% (700 million yuan). By road, clothing supplies grew 66.9%, to 27.3 billion yuan.

Sea vs land: why the figures fell in favour of the rails

The crisis in the Red Sea and around the Strait of Hormuz forced carriers to go around Africa. Result: +14–15 days of transit, a multiple rise in freight at peak periods, a shortage of container equipment in China.

The land route rose 8–9% over the same time. Rail delivery is 15–20 days versus 45–60 by sea via Suez.

The conclusion is simple. Sea remains cheaper on certain volumes and directions, but has stopped being predictable. Zabaykalsk offers what freight doesn’t: a calculated deadline that doesn’t change with the news.

Manzhouli: no longer transshipment but an industrial hub

On the Chinese side, a 25.11 sq km pilot free-trade zone has been deployed, more than half of which (12.66 sq km) is given over to an industrial site — full-cycle production, not a temporary storage warehouse.

Separately, an intelligent transport hub and a digital dry port for the TIR system are being built: 150 million yuan of investment, 140,000 sq m, automated climate-controlled warehouses, container terminals, a customs-control zone, parking and a hotel for drivers. Declared capacity — 500,000 tonnes of TIR cargo and 100,000 TEU a year, 40% faster clearance and a 15% cut in transport costs.

This changes the very logic of the work: cargo doesn’t just cross the border but gains added value on the spot — assembly, repacking, consolidation, adaptation to Russian-market requirements.

What this means for your cargo

  1. Timing is calculated, not guessed. 24/7 clearance and digital inspection have removed the main source of uncertainty.
  2. Any commodity range. Groupage, containers, oversized, special machinery, perishables — the hub’s universality means you don’t have to choose between route and cargo.
  3. Infrastructure at the border. Bonded warehouse, storage, transshipment, consolidation — all in one place, without extra legs.
  4. Room to grow. The road-crossing reconstruction and the second rail track are set with a horizon to 2028–2030. The route won’t hit a ceiling within a year.
  5. Independence from the sea market. The Red Sea freight rate no longer sets your cost base.
